Punarnava is also known as Pigweed, Spreading Hog Weed and Gondhapurna
It is popularly also known as Purnarnava meaning “ That which rejuvenates or renews the body”.
Punarnava is widely distributed in tropical and sub tropical regions and warm climate.
Predominantly found in Sri Lanka, Australia, Sudan, Malay Peninsula, Africa, America and Islands of the Pacific

Punarnava is a perennial creeping, prostrate or ascending herb
Plants grows profusely in rainy seasons and mature seeds are formed in October-November
The Punarnava plant attains a height upto 1m with spreading branches
Leaves are ovate-oblong, round or sub-cordate at base and smooth above.
Margins of leaves are smooth, wavy orundulate
Upper surface of leaves is green smooth and glabrous which is pinkish white hairy beneath
Flowers are minute sub umbellate on the ultimate branch which are hermaphrodite.
The Punarnava Fruit is achene which is ovate, oblong, pubescent, five ribbed and glandular
