Kodo Millet is an annual, loosely tufted, shallow rooting grass, well adapted in the tropics and subtropics.
It is primarily grown in India, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and West Africa.
Kodo Millet is grown as an important crop in India, the major states producing Kodo Millet are Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
Grain are the most economically important part of Kodo Millet.
Kodo Millet is a heat loving plant and for its germination the minimum temperature required is 8° - 10°C.
A mean temperature range of 26°-29°C during the growth period is best for proper development of the plant and for a good crop yield.
Kodo Millet has a heavy water requirement which grows well in moderate rainfall of 50-60cm.
Kodo Millet has wide adaptability to different soils from very poor to very fertile and can tolerate a certain degree of alkalinity.
The best soils are alluvial, loamy and sandy soil with good drainage.
Kodo Millet can also be grown in gravelly and stony soils such as in hilly regions.
