Garden Pea is an annual herbaceous legume grown for its edible seeds and seedpods.
It is also referred to as Pea or English Pea or Green Pea.
Garden Peas are known to have originated from Southwest Asia.
The major Garden Pea producing countries in the world are Canada, Russia, China, India, US, Ukraine and France.
The Garden Pea producing states of India are Karnataka , Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Punjab, Assam, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar and Orissa
Seeds and seed pods are the most economically important part of Garden Peas
Garden Peas are cool-season crops and should be grown in early Spring or late summer to avoid high summer temperatures.
Garden Peas grow best at temperatures between 15° and 24°C and are tolerant of frost down to -6.5°C.
These plants will grow best in soils rich in organic matter with a pH between 5.5 and 7.
They should be planted in a well draining soil or raised bed as they do not tolerate too much moisture.
Garden Peas perform best in full sunlight although they are also tolerant of partial shade.
