Over the years, introduction of higher yielding crop varieties, chemical fertilizers and nutrients have been the mainstay effort in meeting the ever increasing demand of food in India. With a predicted population of 1.5 billion by the year 2050, India's demand for food will grow by 66%. This is a daunting task as there is very little scope for expanding the area under cultivation. Therefore, future needs for food, fibre & fuel would have to be met through increasing agricultural productivity.
However, indiscriminate use of bulk fertilizers has accentuated problems in Agriculture. Soil productivity has declined. Deficiencies of micronutrients in soil have been gravely felt. Increased incidence of diseases and pests has also gravely affected the overall output. It is estimated that annually Rs. 90,000crore worth of food grains are lost to pest attacks. This soon may pose a threat to the nutritional security and environmental safety of the country.
There is a need to promote balanced fertilization and consequently increase agricultural productivity in the country through more balanced usage of secondary and micro nutrients. The need to move from bulk usage to efficient nutrient based practices in the Indian farming is felt highest today. Noting the alarming situation, the Indian Government plans to undertake various steps including introduction of NBS.
