Sapota is commonly known as Sapodilla or Chikoo.
It is long-lived, evergreen tree native to southern Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
Major countries growing Sapota are Pakistan, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Mexico.
In India the total area under Sapota cultivation is 158.9 hectares with a production of 1346.3 Metric tones.
Major states cultivating Sapota are Andaman & Nicobar, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Orissa, Pondicherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Tripura and West Bengal.
Sapota, being a tropical crop can be grown from sea level upto 1200 mt.
It needs warm (10-380°C) and humid climate (70% relative humidity) for growth and can be cultivated throughout the year.
Coastal climate is best suited for its Sapota cultivation.
It can be grown on wide range of soils ranging from sandy loam to clay loam.
Alluvial, sandy loam, red laterite and medium black soils with good drainage are ideal for cultivation of Sapota.
It can tolerate salty conditions to a great extent.
