Barnyard Millet is also known as Japanese Millet, Black Millet or Alkali Millet.
It is an annual warm season crop, that is cultivated on a small scale in India, Japan, China and Korea.
Japanese Millet is thought to have been domesticated from barnyard grass in eastern Asia and is sometimes also referred to as Billion-Dollar grass.
In India major Barnyard Millet growing states are Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Grains are the most economically important part of Barnyard Millet.
Straw is used for animal feed.
Barnyard Millet is a drought tolerant crop and hence is grown as a rainfed crop.
It can be grown successfully under partially water logged conditions.
Warm and moderately humid climate is good for growing Barnyard Millet.
Barnyard Millet is generally cultivated in soils of marginal fertility.
It thrives best on sandy loam to loam soil having sufficient amount of organic matter.
Gravely and stony soils with poor fertility are not suitable for raising Barnyard Millet.
