Mentha is commonly known as Pudina.
Plants are herbs or shrubs with an aromatic smell.
They are native to North America, Southern Africa and Australia, mints are widely distributed throughout the temperate areas of the world.
It is grown wild in Europe while Mentha is cultivated in Japan, England, France, Italy, the USA, Bulgaria, Russia, and India.
In India it is cultivated in foothills of Himalayas in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Mentha leaves are the most economically important part of Mentha cultivation
Mentha can be cultivated in both tropical and subtropical regions.
The suitable temperature for mint cultivation is between 20˚C to 40˚C.
The rainfall should be between 100-110 cm.
Light showers at planting time and good sunny days at harvesting stage is best for good quality leaves.
Mentha can be cultivated in wide range of soils.
Loam or sandy loam or deep soils rich in organic matter are best for its cultivation.
Mentha thrives well in fertile soil with pH 6.0-8.0.
